Elle Argent is a main character in the first season of Netflix series Heartstopper. She is portrayed by Yasmin Finney.

Biography

Early life

Elle used to attend Truham, but after transitioning and an extensive amount of bullying she changed schools to Higgs.

Season 1

Although she is a biological male, Elle enters Higgs without her longtime pals back at Truham. But she soon finds her footing, becoming close friends with Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell). All while she deals with her intensifying feelings for her best friend Tao.[1]

Meet

Elle is sitting in the cafeteria alone at Higgs, texting Tao, when a teacher comes over and confiscates her phone, claiming they don't make exceptions, even for new students. The next day, as she is walking to school, she looks through the crowd of Truham students to try to spot her friends, but with no luck.

Crush

Elle is sitting in class one day when a teacher approaches her and notes she hasn't made any friends yet. She offers to assign her to Tara Jones, but Elle insists she’s fine. The teacher then tells her to try and make at least one friend before the end of term. Elle tries to gather up the courage to talk to people but with no luck. The next day she is approached by Tara Jones, who gives her back her pencil case after she dropped it. She is later invited to sit with Tara and Darcy at lunch, and the three girls start up a conversation. Elle goes over to Charlie's house with Tao and Isaac where they explain that Charlie has a crush on a boy named Nick Nelson though they believe Nick likes Elle's classmate Tara Jones. The boys ask Elle if she could find out if Tara likes Nick; she refuses, claiming that Nick is the straightest person she has ever seen, and she doesn't know Tara that well. After she sees Charlie's downcast expression, though, she relents and claims that if she gets the chance, she'll ask

Later in French class, Elle asks to pair up with Darcy and Tara. While the girls are practicing, the question "Do you have a boyfriend?" comes up. Elle asks the question to Darcy, who replies "J’ai une petite amie". Elle then points out that "petite amie" is feminine, which means Darcy would be saying she has a girlfriend. Darcy looks at Tara before laughing it off and saying "whoops". It is then Tara’s turn to answer the question, to which she replies that she does not have a boyfriend. Darcy looks at her and Tara defends herself by say "What? It’s true" before laughing with Darcy, leaving Elle confused.

Elle shows up to class early one day and sees Tara and Darcy holding hands. She asks the girls if they are together. The two admit they are, and jokingly tell Elle she's "befriended the school lesbians" as the three girls hold hands. Elle later texts Charlie and tells him that Tara definitely doesn't like Nick.

Elle is kind and sweet, and cares deeply about her friends. She is often playful and witty and enjoys joking around with others, especially with her best friend and crush, Tao. She is considerate of others' feelings and is not afraid to voice her opinion.

Physical description

Trivia

  • In the French version of the series, Elle’s name is Ella. This is because elle is the french for the pronoun her, and therefore it would’ve been confusing for her name to be Elle.
  • In the French version, the girls speak Spanish instead of French in language class.
