Nicholas "Nick" Luke Nelson is a main character in the first season of Netflix series and the webcomic Heartstopper, written by Alice Osman. He is portrayed by Kit Connor.
On the outside, Nick is a confident rugby player with plenty of friends, who never thought to question his sexuality, but when he meets Charlie, he starts feeling things he doesn’t understand.
Nick first starts questioning his sexuality when he feels things for Charlie he hasn’t felt for any other friends. He first starts researching sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community by taking an “Am I Gay?” quiz, researching LGBTQ+ friendly websites, and LGBTQ+ movies.
He is bisexual.
Biography[]
In Season 1, Nick appears to be, as Elle says, “the straightest person.” But there’s far more to Nick than others assume. When he meets Charlie, Nick starts feeling things he doesn’t understand.
In Season 2, Nick must figure out what it means to him to be bisexual as he falls hard for boyfriend Charlie. Throughout the series, Nick invests in friendships with Charlie’s BFFs, like Tao and Elle — while also trying to maintain his prior athletic connections.[1]
Personality[]
Nicks personality has overall been friendly and extroverted. He has always been out to do things and has been a loyal friend towards his boyfriend Charlie Spring in the beginning. He is also defensive toward his friend Imogen Heaney from her liking or "fancying" Ben Hope. The Extroverted part definitely comes from his obsession with rugby and his over all bright attitude in Season 2.
Relationships[]
Family[]
Nick lives with his mum Sarah. It is not shown in season one but Nick has an older brother, David, and his dad lives in France. This is why he is fluent in French. He also has a family dog, Nellie, and in the last book gets a pug named Henry.
Romances[]
His first kiss was with Tara Jones when they were both 13; after that, they had no interest in each other as Tara discovered she is a lesbian. Imogen Heaney had a crush on him, but they mutually decided that it would be best to just stay friends. His boyfriend later into season 1 is Charlie Spring.
Friends[]
Enemies[]
Ben Hope is one of Nick’s two enemies. They really don’t get along well because Ben treated Charlie badly and used him, and Nick is very protective of Charlie. Nick’s second enemy is Harry Greene, one of his former friends who has now been revealed to be transphobic and homophobic, in season 2 however, Harry becomes more friendly towards Charlie and even apologises for being homophobic. It is not known whether or not he actually meant the apology but Charlie and the others do not accept his apology. It is mentioned in the series that he is transphobic towards Elle Argent and may have had a role in making her decide to join Higgs after transitioning. It is unknown whether or not there is anymore bullying by him towards Elle in the series but it could be likely that he did so on Sports day and the Paris trip after Higgs and Truham merged for those events.
Physical appearance[]
Nick has dark blonde hair and brown eyes. He is muscular as a result of playing rugby.
