Out is the first episode of the second season of Netflix's Heartstopper, and the ninth episode of the series overall.[1]
Synopsis[]
As his relationship with Charlie matures, Nick considers coming out to Imogen — but it's a lot harder than he expected. Elle tries flirting with Tao.
Plot[]
Charlie and Nick are now boyfriends, and they are having the best time of their lives as they are texting back and forth while getting ready for school. Tori for her part can’t help but sigh as she watches a giddy Charlie reply to Nick’s texts.
At the school, Nick tells Charlie that he has officially come out to his mum as a bisexual and wishes to come out to some of his friends who might understand.
However, since exams are coming up, things at Truman High are doing a lot of studying with their GCSE revisions, which is headed by Mr. Farouk, who unfortunately has Nick paired up with Ben. Mr. Farouk is also upfront about his rules about no chatting and no texting during class. Meanwhile, Charlie comes up with an idea to help Nick come out. Thus, he rejoins the rugby team. However, Nick, who is still a little mad at his teammates for being bad to Charlie, is unable to put his focus on the game.
Meanwhile, Elle’s friends suggest her to flirt with Tao a little and break out of his strong exterior of not letting her in as a romantic partner. Charlie’s real idea, however, was to invite all of his close friends, including Darcy and Tara, to a sleepover at his house. The idea includes bringing Imogen into the situation and breaking the news of Nick’s coming out to her.
On the way to show Imogen to the bathroom, Nick tries again to tell her, but before he can blurt it out, Imogen tells him that he knows about him and Charlie because it’s so obvious. He then tells her about his being bisexual. However, when he asks her about his crush, she tells him it’s Ben, and that frustrates him, but he keeps it to himself.
Realizing that he is in a safe space, the next morning, Nick kisses Charlie in front of all their friends. Charlie and Tori discuss his decision to let people know about them and bring in the cavalry of bullies again. Charlie says that he is not afraid, and now that he knows how to deal with all the shame thrown his way, he can protect Nick from it.
