Development[]
Oseman went onto confirm on October 4, 2024 that there was a point when she got to the end of writing this season where she was essentially sort of writing the same scene at the same time in both the episode and graphic novel formats. She further reveals how, "They collided right at the end, but at the time of writing season three, I hadn’t even planned volume six. The writing of season 3 was very much the point at which the comics and the show have met. They’re at the same point now. It was scary in that sense because normally, in previous seasons, I would give the books to all the cast, and all the heads of department would all get to read the comic and see what the scenes from the scripts are in the original comics, but I couldn’t do that for volume five, because it literally didn’t exist as a book yet.”[11]
See-Saw executive producer Patrick Walters praised both Locke’s and Connor’s building of the TV versions of Charlie and Nick, highlighting a specific moment of Connor’s acting that snagged the season’s second Billie Eilish needle drop. He recalls how, “We did a collab with Billie Eilish where ‘Birds of a Feather’ from her album was on the teaser that we released, and that was the first time anyone had heard it. Then we were also in a position where we had this one bit in ep four, where Nick is telling Charlie that he loves him, but he’s directing it to Tao’s video camera because Charlie’s not there. It’s at a Halloween party, and we struggled to find a bit of music to underpin that that would have believably been played at a Halloween party full of teenagers, but also had the emotional resonance that we needed in it. Because we knew the Billie Eilish team, it was an amazing thing where we’re like, ‘Maybe we try one of those songs?’ which we wouldn’t normally do because a megastar like that might be quite expensive, but we put ‘BLUE’ a song from her album at that moment. That’s one of my favorite season three music syncs, because Kit’s face and his performance are so emotive, and you believe it, but then that song is so singular and brilliant.”[11]
Casting[]
On August 3rd, 2023, it was announced that Season 2 was the final season to feature Sebastian Croft, as Ben Hope, and his last appearance was in the season 2 finale "Perfect".[12]
On March 28, 2024, Olivia Colman announced that she would not be returning for Season 3 due to a scheduling conflict and felt awful about it.[13] However, Oseman stated that if the series gets a Season 4, she would love for Olivia to be a part of it again!”[14]
On April 22, 2024, it was announced that Jonathan Bailey will appear in Season 3 as Charlie's Instagram-famous crush.[15]
On August 27, 2024, it was announced that Hayley Atwell will play Nick's aunt, Diane, and Eddie Marsan will portray Geoff, Charlie's wise and straight-talking therapist. In addition, Michael Holden will be portrayed by Darragh Hand.[16]
In the second episode of Heartstopper: The Official Podcast, it was revealed that Annette Badland was cast to portray Darcy's grandmother in season 3[17]
On June 10, 2024 Kit teased that one point, the crew was hoping to get Sir Ian McKellen for a cameo on the series, but it has not pan out [as of yet].[18]
Filming[]
On October 2023, it was revealed that Andy Newbery would be taking the role of director from Euros Lyn in an unspecified number of episodes for this season.[19]
On May 6 2024, on a Patreon post, Alice mentions that they filmed Season 3 from October to December and that they've been editing the show since January and are currently colour grading, sound mixing and creating all the animation and score.[20]
On August 29, 2024, it was stated that “the second half of the season is [all] about sex”. Moreover, Locke went onto say “how he was also keen to tackle some darker themes [this season]; including Charlie’s struggles with an eating disorder and self-harm stemming from the horrific bullying he faced at school”. In addition, Locke stated that after two seasons, he savoured the opportunity to dig deeper into Charlie’s “dark places,” and trust that he could find his way back...[21]
On September 20, 2024, Jenny Walser confirmed that she and Kit Connor got to film more scenes this season compared to Season 1 or Season 2 as result of Charlie's mental health struggles.[22]
On September 29, 2024 Locke revealed how they “have a knack on this show of filming summer scenes when it’s not summer and having to pretend we’re all really warm when we’re actually freezing,” and with Kit agreeing that filming his scenes in the sea was a “very cold” experience, despite how it might come across on scene.[23]
Connor also confirmed how he filmed shirtless a good portion of the season, and as a result, he had to wax his chest every two weeks until filming wrapped. [23]
New filming locations include filming on location at Lyme Regis beach on the Dorset coast im Love, the island of Menorca in Home, Whipsnade Zoo, the UK's largest zoo, located just outside of Luton in Talk, Elle's new school which was filmed on location at The University of Creative Arts, in Farnham, Surrey and in Apart Nick, Elle, Imogen, and Tara do a road trip to some of the universities around England, which include Oxford, Kent, and Leeds.[24]
On October 1, 2021, during a set visit by reporters from the BBC, they revealed how the crew is very protective over how many people are in the room with the actors during more emotional scenes. Dozens of silent crew members are crammed into a room next door, watching intently on monitors while the actors do several takes.[25] In addition, it is further revealed how some of the most iconic locations in the show are actually flat-packed and assembled inside the school, as and when required.[25] For example, there's Nick’s bedroom assembled in what would have been the school’s sports hall. From books about bisexuality, to Polaroid pictures of Nick and Charlie together, the crew has gone to painstaking lengths to make the bedroom a true reflection of the character's journey throughout the series.[25]
On October 3, 2024 Oseman mentioned that unlike the graphic novels that inspire the series, she wanted to end this season wanted to end Season 3 “on a high note”. Something that both Locke and Connor are happy with, and stated that this change works for the tv series.[26]
On October 4, 2024 it was revealed that Bailey only shot his scene for one day on set, and Oseman recalled having to write him lines spur of the moment. She further revealed how, “We hadn’t actually scripted very much for him to say, and when we were on set, we realized, ‘Oh, we need him to say a little bit more.’ So I had to, on the day, on set, I wrote him like, a full paragraph of stuff to say about ancient history and literature sort of give that to him and be like, ‘I’m so sorry. Please learn this paragraph right now,’” Oseman said. “He was very happy to do that, so I was very grateful for that. He brought a lot of joy and brightness to set that day, which was lovely.[27][11]
On October 8, 2024, Oseman is also credited as a second unit director, which she mentions came about quite unexpectedly. She mentions how, "We always struggle and we were struggling to find a second unit director. Patrick [Walters], another executive producer, asked if I wanted to do some second unit directing. My initial reaction was: 'Absolutely not.' Eventually, I talked myself into it. I did a few scenes with Nick when he’s [alone] in the bedroom and the Imogen and Sahar conversation in the tent at Charlie’s party."[28]
On October 29, 2024 while speaking on the messaging platform Discord, Oseman told fans that there was a deleted scene this season which involved Charlie’s teachers, gay couple, Nathan Ajayi (Fisayo Akinade) and Youssef Farouk (Nima Taleghani). Oseman clarifies how in this aforementioned scene “Mr. Ajayi and Mr. Farouk have a brief conversation about whether Mr. A should alert Charlie’s parents about what Charlie has said [and his declining mental health]...”.[29]
On January 4, 2025 part of Charlie's arc is getting diagnosed With anorexia nervosa & obsessive-compulsive disorder; with his OCCD being depicted in a different way from typical OCD ticks like constantly cleaning their room or washing their hands...[30]
Reception[]
On October 4, 2024 it was announced the season received a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and overall early audience rating of 96%.[31]

- On August 27, 2024, promotional images for this season were released.[32]
- Also on this day, the episode titles were confirmed.[33]
- On August 29, 2024, Locke teased that the show is maturing in this season where the wholesome Charlie and Nick finally move past kissing. - On September 1, 2024 Connor teased the series has gradually taken “baby steps” toward filming intimate sex scenes over the course of the three seasons. He states how “Season 1, [the intimacy coordinator] would be there making sure that we were comfortable holding hands. And now we’re doing the sex scenes. We shot a lot of footage for them. Not much actually ended up in the show. But we shot the sex scenes for about seven hours!”[35]
- On September 3, 2024 Heartstopper: The Official Podcast was announced, and confirmed to be a four-part series, which is hosted by RuPaul's Drag Race UK Season 2 alumni, and RuPaul's Drag Race UK vs The World Season 2 winner Tia Kofi, which goes behind the scenes with the stars of the hit YA show and promises “juicy secrets, loads of laughs, and ALL the feels”.[36]
- On September 7, 2024, another sneak peek into the show’s third season was released, where Nick and Charlie talk about the Menorca family trip Nick is going.[37]
- On September 15, 2024 a sneak peek teased Tara and Darcy's storyline this season will incorporate the need to incorporate their individual needs into their relationship as Darcy continues to deal with their homophobic mother.[38]
- On September 21, 2024, a sneak peek featuring Tao & Elle was unveiled, with Tao gifting Elle a bracelet with the first letter of his name on it. After instructing Tao to close his eyes, Elle procures a sunflower, which excites Tao because it mirrors the flowers he gave her, when he asked her out.[39]
- On September 24, 2024, Connor and Locke revealed how even if their on-screen chemistry looks flawless, the many kissing scenes between Charlie and Nick led to a rather painful complication: beard burn. With both stating how, “[w]e were kissing so much that it wasn’t healing, so it was getting worse and worse,” Joe Locke confessed during the interview. What initially seemed like a minor discomfort soon turned into an on-set issue. “They had to VFX it out because it was so bad,” Locke continued, explaining that the scabs caused by repeated friction from their facial hair had become too visible during filming. As a result, the post-production team had to step in to digitally smooth out Locke’s chin in several scenes.[40]
- On September 25, 2024, Connor revealed that as a result of filming the shower scene, he had to run in the dark – wet, shirtless and bare-footed. He further admitted how, “It took a good few takes, [and] [w]e shot a lot of coverage for it. There was a big crane wide shot, and it was pretty chilly. But it was a lovely scene, and I like getting sprayed down. Massive fan. Saoirse, my lovely hair and makeup artist, was very good at spraying me down with water. I kind of enjoyed it. It could’ve been much worse”.[41]
- On September 30, 2024 the first three minutes of "Love", the first episode and the season premiere were made available by Netflix.[42]
- On October 1, 2024 Oseman confirmed that as she was mapping out this season, she knew she needed to include one crucial scene. It's a beloved moment from Oseman's original graphic novels, in which Nick has a tearjerking heart-to-heart with his mom, Sarah Nelson, on the beach about his boyfriend's struggles with anorexia and depression. "Love can't cure mental illness," Sarah tells her son in what is now one of the most recognized quotes from Oseman's work. However, after Coleman's exit, Oseman reworked the scene around Hayley Atwell.[43]
- On October 2, 2024 Rhea went onto say that this season, that with the characters are getting much older now. They’re looking at universities, Imogen included, and thinking a lot about the future — who they want to be when they go into the world...Imogen in particular, she teased will have a continuation of her journey from season two, where she’s thinking a lot about who she is and she’s considering her identity — where she fits in, where she doesn’t. Big, teenage life questions to tackle.[44]
- On October 3, 2024, when not filming, Locke opened up about his favourite memory during the filming period for this season and saying 'We were all having dinner in Lyme Regis in the first week of shooting and we basically were chased. We were chased out of a restaurant,' he said.[45]
- On October 4, 2024, Oseman confirmed that sex is a major theme in Season 3. But it's not only Charlie and Nick getting ready to have sex for the first time, but their friends, Elle and Tao, also take their romance to the next level. [46][47]
- In addition, Oseman confirms that this season opens three weeks after the Season 2 finale. In the final month of the summer holiday, Charlie, Nick and their friends head to the beach.[46][48]
- Isaac and Elle both got major moments that weren’t in the comics.[11]
- While Isaac is a character that isn’t in the comics at all, Oseman, who identifies as asexual and aromantic, wanted to explore a character like that in the TV show. Which in turn lead to the pivotal scene at the aquarium that showcases Isaac’s story this season, which "is very much about his feelings of isolation and alienation from all of his friends because most of them are in a relationship, and they’re very obsessed with romance, and those are things that Isaac just doesn’t relate to at all,” Oseman said. “He feels like society is telling him that sex and romance are the most important things you could ever hope for, but he doesn’t want that, and that makes him feel lonely and out of place in his friend group. In the aquarium, he finally gets to confront his friends about those feelings and express himself. It’s a really beautiful scene, and Tobie did an absolutely incredible job with it.”[11]
- Yasmin Finney collaborated with Oseman on exploring the character’s transgender identity, which led to a pivotal interview scene for Elle that matched the present cultural moment surrounding trans people. Oseman reveals how, “We see a lot more of Elle’s experience as a trans girl. This season, we see her experience of having gender dysphoria and how that impacts her relationship with Tao, but we also get a sense of the sort of wider culture of transphobia that she’s dealing with every single day.[11]
- On October 8, 2024 confirmed that while Tori is asexual, Tori actually doesn't reveal this about herself until volume 5 of the graphic novel, which was just adapted to the series. The season hints at this eventuality in the fifth episode "Winter during the fireworks scene when the colors of the Ace flag appear in the background when she takes a sip of her drink. Oseman hopes to explore Tori's ace journey more in a potential fourth season.[49]
- On October 18, 2024, Andy Newbery shared on Instagram a few of his favourite shots from the episodes: "Love" and "Home"as well as a few bts bits too. Among them being how he wanted to capture Charlie’s isolation in how they shot him across these episodes but also not missing those lovely moments of closeness and joy that he experiences too.[50]
- On December 31, 2024, the full video of bloopers for the season were released.[51]
- On February 13, 2025, Oseman reiterated that “there is still a lot of hope [about a fourth season], please don’t give up!” Oseman wrote back. “I can’t share any details right now, only that discussions are actively ongoing and there are many people behind the scenes who are working hard to make it happen.”[52]
Trivia[]
- On August 26, 2023, it was teased in Perfect, the season 2 finale that Imogen Heaney would potentially be going through her sapphic awakening when it was seen that she was looking at Sahar Zahid.[53]
- On September 11, 2024, an official poster for the season was released.[54]
- On September 22, 2024, it was announced that some Heartstopper fans will get a chance to win two tickets to an exclusive advance screening of episodes 1 and in three select cities in the United Kingdom and Ireland on October 2, 2024.[55]
- Oseman went onto say that after having Jonathan Bailey as a guest star this season, she is open to more guest appearances in potential future seasons, with Andrew Scott coming to mind saying, “I love Andrew Scott... I think he’s such an established queer actor … he would be an incredible addition to the show. Maybe he can be another teacher or something like that, I don’t know, but that would be cool.”[56]
- As of October 2024, Netflix stocked new merchandise based on the show that viewers can buy.[57]
- In one scene for the season 3 premiere "Love", Nick asks Charlie if he will be staying over to watch a movie with him. Charlie jokes that he will, as long as it is not a Marvel movie. Nick retorts that he forgot Charlie had no taste before he closed the door. Ironically, Locke would eventually be revealed to have been cast as Billy Maximoff, AKA Wiccan on the Marvel series Agatha All Along.[58]
- Years earlier, around 2017, Alice Oseman had drawn Charlie and Nick as Wiccan and Hulkling for a Halloween party in the web novel.[59]
- On October 4,2024 Walters revealed how he had heard through a mutual friend that Bailey loved Heartstopper, which led to the actor making a cameo as historian Jack Maddox (Henry Maddox in the mini-comic, which was changed for the show because of Nick’s second dog being named Henry in the show) in "Body".[11]
- On October 5, 2024 Oseman went onto confirm that in writing Elle and Tao's romance, she "wanted to show a trans character being adored by their partner, and I wanted for Elle being trans to not be an issue for Tao in any way. I think it was really important to show Tao as a straight boy liking a trans girl, and not call into question anything about his sexuality.”[60]
- Also on this day, it was revealed that Raphael Dilhan, from The Great British Sewing Bee had been commissioned by Netflix to create a Pride-inspired flag which aims to bring these stories together in one celebratory piece. The flag would go onto be on display at the Queer Britain Museum from Oct. 5, 2024 until Saturday, October 19, 2024.[61]
- On October 7, 2024 it was announced that The Heartstopper Official Playlist, has been saved by more than 800,000 listeners, and has been updated with artists and songs featured in the new season. They also refreshed the character playlists for Nick and Charlie, Tara and Darcy, and Elle and Tao as well. Within Spotify's GLOW hub, a dedicated space on Spotify spotlighting music and podcasts from LGBTQIA+ voices, listeners will find curated GLOW Tapes playlists from Kizzy Edgell, who plays the role of Darcy Olsson in the series, as well as author Alice Oseman.[62]
- On October 9, 2024 Kit and Joe joked that they don’t know how Nick and Charlie’s story ends because neither of them can be trusted with such a big secret.[63]
- On October 10, 2024 Oseman went onto say that the focus is on maintaining the magic of Heartstopper in page-turning form. They are “very much at the beginning” of creating Volume 6, which would inspire any upcoming Heartstopper TV content, meaning that neither book nor TV adaptation will “be out for quite a while yet.”[64]
- On October 15, 2024 went onto mention how she is definitely inspired by all the cast and stated how, "I encourage them to unpack the characters in their own ways and really take ownership over their interpretations of the characters. And in turn, that gives me ideas and makes me think about characters in ways that I haven’t done before. So, for example, Kizzy, who portrays Darcy in Season 3, Darcy goes on a whole nonbinary journey, which is very inspired by his own experience. And that’s something that I now love to put into the books as well, and I’m hoping to put that in Volume 6. So they’re kind of all intermingling."[65]
- On October 25, 2024, Kit Connor reveals the Heartstopper scene he can’t watch is the one where his character has an emotional scene with Atwell's character regarding Charlie in the episode "Home"...His favorite episode to shoot however was "Journey". [66]
- On November 13, 2024, Jonathan Bailey opened up about how his guest appearance came to be and what the series means to him stating, “I sort of wedged myself into that part. I was so moved by the series and also the graphic novel”. Moreover, he said that, “Heartstopper seems to allow people to feel catharsis and to feel a sort of melancholic sort of nostalgia for what could have been”... Bailey noted that he loved the cast and added, “I think they’re brilliant. I remember seeing all of them speak to their own experiences and being like, My God, they’re so erudite and grounded and thoughtful and kind and compassionate in their answers...I would be really proud of myself if I could be a part of that as my younger self,” he continued. “Everyone above the age of 40 should be forced to watch it.”[67]
- On December 10, 2024, Heartstopper was one of many series that were honored as part of the inaugural edition of The Velma Awards because they focus on elevating and celebrating children’s media pushing the boundaries of LGBTQ-inclusive storytelling. They were launched by the Chris Nee who co-founded The Rainbow Project, in order to celebrate creatives and children’s and family media working towards better onscreen representation of LGBTQ+ youth and their families.[68]
- On December 24, 2024 Netflix released the first part of the Season 3 bloopers for the season.[69]
- On January 24, 2025 the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced that Joe Locke was among the 2025 honorees for the HRC Greater New York Dinner, taking place on February 1st, 2025 in New York City. Locke will be honored with HRC’s Impact Award for bringing meaningful LGBTQ+ stories and voices to audiences across the world for his roles as Charlie Spring on Heartstopper and Billy/Wiccan on Agatha All Along.[70]
